Possible solutions for the secrets

Secret 1 was:
What is the advantage of the two masts configuration with the smaller sail in front of the mainsail?
Postulate 1:
It resembles the so called "Canard wing" in aviation, which means that it has the advantage of "stable cruising"!! See the Canard wing examples of the Kites of the Wright brothers and the Saab Frigen below.

A Thought for Today zei

Hi Leo,

Interesting idea...
I've read it in several places, that the advantage of the unstayed mast was the so called "spilling of wind", which is quite advantageous if the vessel was able to capsize easily, eg. a cat boat or other shallow-draughted boats.

a one masted cat boat was hard to handle before the wind (once before the wind it could be excessively difficult to change to a different course.

A cat-ketch or schooner would alleviate this issue. Besides when the boat is of a certain size, the boat could be handled more easily with two smaller sails that need little to no attention while tacking, than one large sail.
